Monterey, part of California's Central Coast, is one of California's newer wine regions, with vines planted only as recently as the 1960s. Cool weather and sandy soil influence this region's wines, though it does have a number of microclimates. Many of the wineries are at great distances from each other, making visits challenging.

Hahn has estate vineyards in the climatically diverse Santa Lucia Highlands and Arroyo Seco AVAs and are thus able to produce many varietals under ideal conditions. Their wines are inexpensive yet good. The Hahn brand was created in 1991 "to showcase supple, accessible, and attractively priced wines from the family's Monterey County vineyards."

Heller dry-farms all of its grapes organically in Carmel Valley, producing intense, unfiltered wines. Ms. Toby Heller's sculptures decorate the winery as well as locations around the United States and Europe.
