Cobán, Guatemala by Eve Andersson

Cobán is a town in the Guatemalan highlands with a historically high number of German settlers (though they're hard to spot now). While the town itself has some charm, most visitors merely use Cobán as a base point to explore the beautiful natural surroundings. Near Cobán, you will find: Semuc Champey, an incredibly beautiful natural limestone bridge resting on top of a river, with little waterfalls and pools of crystal clear water that are excellent for swimming. Las Grutas de Lanquin, a large cave with excellent formations and a river that flows under it. El Biotopo de Quetzal, a nature reserve. Despite the name, you will find very few quetzales (Guatemala's national bird) there; they have moved to higher ground. Nonetheless, you will find tranquil hiking trails with lush plant life in the Biotopo. The Town

I always wanted to go to coban, now that I have to opportunity to visit and take those many pictures with all my friends I am really excited. Come to visit Guatemala, Coban is waiting for you, we have so many beautiful places and caverns just like the ones in Virginia The Luray Caverns, but here they are called Lanquin Caverns, you will not regret it. You will loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee it. Coban, so nice to relax and have contact with nature, it is not expensive you can even get a hotel with everything for only 13 dollars, you will not believe it.

I cannot wait to get to Coban, unfortunately, I don't jet off to Guatemala until November 04. The Bitopo reminds me of Madidi National Park in Bolivia, which I visited last year. ROLL ON NOVEMBER!!!!!!!!!

best 2.5 yrs of my life

I was a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer based in Coban from Jan 1970-Apr 1973. Although I've since traveled to every continent except Anarctica, and can go anywhere at any time I want, my 27 months in Coban were perhaps the most memorable years of my life. I loved it! Even when I left in 73, there was not one meter of paved street in the town. In 1971 the last 100 Kl of road from the Atlantic coast hwy was still all mud. I covered most of the country by motorcycle (and made 2 roundtrips from Atlanta, GA-Coban by Yamaha 350), but my 3000 sq. ft. house in metro Atlanta now doesn't give me the contented pleasure of my rented 950 sq. ft. house in Coban. I did most of my shopping @El Gallo, which is still there, founded by a German immigrant named Daetz. Had a great friendship with a fascinating girl my age from the coffee plantation family "Dieseldorff", which still gives coffee tours in Coban. Some memory of Coban runs thru my mind almost every day--great place!

Proud to be from Coban

It was a big surprise to me to find a page from people talking about Coban, my beatiful birthtown, thank you very much. I usually go to Coban, every other year, I like to bring my kids with me and they love to go, we usually visit our family and tourist attraction, we like to explore the town, we like to go to El Calvario, El Estadio, la feria(carnival), and places that remind my husband and i of our childhood , he is from a little town close to Coban. I still have many family members and friends there, once I went to El Folklor and took the kids, they were very surprised to see the spectacular culture of different places from all over Guatemala. We have visited every place that is shown with my kids except El Biotopo we plan on that this year hopefully

Good memories

I lived in Coban for two years 1975-1977. My husband was a dynamite expert on the hydroelectric dam project. I opened the first preschool the town had ever had, and expanded it to higher grades before I left to return to the States. I wonder if it is still there? I have wonderful memories of the town and the people. Many of my Guatelamalan friends were from the university and had to go into exile because of the troubles at that time, but I often think of those who remained in Coban and of the Benedictine fathers who were so kind.

I lived in Coban in 1992, and the memories are great. I would also recommend Senahu if you can get there and handle being in a largely K'ekchi'-speaking environment. It is like a compact Coban, so if you don't go, you still get the idea.

Motorcycle Tours

I think that I read and share the same love for a wonderful country. I have visited Guatemala several times and for the last two times it was on a Motorbike. I have very little doubt in saying if you have the Licence and time to make this posible I would highly recommend that you do it. Catours was my Tour company and they took us to all the great places, and one of the most spectacular sites was indeed Semuc Champey, Buenisimo!

I will just add that all the Motorcyles are Double Purpose all terrain, depending on the time of year you decide to go you will negociate many different road surfaces but in general the roads are good, but a little dirt is almost guaranteed..

I was born in Guatemala City, but my mother is from Coban. She visits annually, but it's been years since I went. These pictures reminded me so much of my last visit. My husband, mother, I plan to spend Christmas over there with my grandmother and aunt. I love everything about Coban- the weather, lush land, and people. I can hardly wait to introduce my husband to such a beautiful place and celebrate Christmas Guatemala style!

Ahora vivo en Santa Ana, California en los Estados Unidos y los anos de mi nines y juventud que vivi en Guatemala fueron los mas felices de mi vida, y comparto el anelo que muchos sienten por nuestra bella Guatemala. Waterfall

There was this place in the mountains outside of coban that i remember. There was an indian village, I think their name was Kochepek? At least that was how i remember it was pronounced. There was this chinese restaurant that my parents would take me to and they would give me a huge plate of rice, chicken, and bean sprouts. Outside of my kitchen window i could see a waterfall. It would take my dad with his machete at least two hours to take us there. My dad was there to try and get electricity to the mountain. We had to leave because of the international warfair. My last day there I remember men in jeeps with big guns, two days later my dad packed us up and we left. - Donna

Soy Guatemalteca de 35 a?os de edad, no tengo el privilegio de conocer mucho de mi hermosa Guatemala, pero he tenido la oportunidad de visitar COBAN y es mi lugar preferido, ahi una puede estar en contacto directo con la naturaleza oler ese verde de los bosques, ver distintas clases de plantas y de animales.

Conoci las grutas del Rey Marcos y es algo explendoroso, es realmente como estar en otra dimension.

Yo en lo personal lo recomiento para desestresarse de un buen tiempo de trabajo, o como una Luna de miel, Que mejor manera de empezar una nueva vida.

Para los que no conocen aun, se les invita a que viajen y sientan ese placer de vivir a lo natural.

I would recomend to all the tourist to go to Coban, i am from coban and i know that is amazing. Especially in champey and coban is a small town where you can walk in the town and see some cultural traditions. Guys come on!!!!! is so beautiful. GO to my town

Hola como estan mmmmm lo recuerdo como si ubiera sido ayer en compania de mis amigos (Salvador Menchu, Walter Ardon, Gustavo, Salvita, y sin faltar Nacho y Toto, o tambien Guallito... todos nos embarcamos en una gran aventura al conoser las cuevas en coban la verdad nunca pense que en mi guatemala existiera tanta belleza,,, recuerdo una de las grutas que fue la que mas temor me dio pero grasias a el apollo de mis amigos logre explorar al maximo la ultima caverna que visitamos fue una experiensia inolvidable la verdad un dia quiero regresar y poder sentir de nuevo lo que vivi ese dia........ no tengo palabras para explicar lo bello que es coban su cultura su fauna todo y sin faltar las personas que conosimos unas personas que enverdad quedan pocas Amables, Carinosas, a todo dar... mi mayor deceo es un dia regresar a Guatemala reencontrarme con mis amigos y envarcarnos de nuevo en un nuevo viaje por mi bello pais... Coban with paved streets! Not when I lived there from 1951-1960. It rained every day when I lived there. Someone mentioned Senahu. We lived there for awhile as well. Great memories! Wonderful times! "Hi" w I have just come back from Guatemala, after a six week holiday which was the best ever, Coban is great, I have been going there for the last fourteen year (every second year). dont think there is any part of the country which I haven't been, but champey and surrounding area, (caves, rivers, mountains are the most exciting). highly recommended, will be returning.

Antes de salir de Guatemala, me hice la promesa de conocer todo el pais primero. Covan fue uno de los lugares que no logre visitar. En el 2005 tube la oportunidad de viajar a Guatemala y me interne por Covan hacia la zona reyna del Ixcan. Guatmala es un pais Enigmatico, Hermosisimo lleno de Magia y ensueno. que no quepa la menor duda que Covan contribuye y es parte de la belleza de nuestro pais. Sueno con tener la oportunidad de regresar a La Alta verapaz y pasar ahi mas tiempo, visitar mas lugares y embriagarme con su belleza. Gracias por el trabjo y el tiempo dedicado a esta pagina.
